Our theme for the month of May was Silk Magic. We were treated to a variety of silk magic, ably introduced by our MC for the evening Bruce Spell. Perhaps the most magical event of the evening was that no Vaurnets or pulls were used in any performance!
Our first performer presented his entire closeup act which he is preparing for the National SAM close-up contest. Todd Gaines is one of our younger members, and decided to subject himself to an audience of magicians - a rather daunting task. But he performed well. His routine was thoughtfully put together and flowed nicely. He began by producing rolls of Lifesavers® candies. After vanishing a borrowed, signed bill, he produced it from inside of the roll of Lifesavers. Todd then produced some Oreo® cookies and performed a matrix routine with them. He closed with a Starburst® candy to the hat routine, with the production of a large Starburst candy as a finale. A well rounded, routine. Good luck this summer, Todd!
Bruce Martyn told us he had a hard time finding an effect which utilized a silk. Those of you who know his Boston Man series of latex magic products understand why that might have been a problem. He did manage to animate a purple silk, and provide us with some enjoyment in the process.
Past President Bill Black presented a card prediction. It utilized the magician's force a number of times to come up with the three of diamonds. From this card, three silks were produced, conforming to the evening's theme.
Our current Most Illustrious, Norm Marini, would provide us with some coin magic, but first he had to use a silk in order to conform to the magic theme: he showed us a musical scarf, and then proceeded to "put a little boogie in it" by blowing his nose into it. On with the "real magic." Beginning with his two empty hands Norm produced four silver dollars from thin air. He then used those silver dollars to perform a nice coins across routine.
Chris Rivette was up next to perform a coin and silk routine. One by one four coins were caused to pass through a silk scarf. Chris then had a spectator initial a quarter. Chris tied a knot in the silk, creating a bag. Holding the quarter in his hand, he struck it with the bag, and now the quarter was in the bag. When the spectator opened the bag, his initial was on the quarter. A nice routine.
John Shryock also treated us to a slightly different version of the coins through the silk, but we had to wait for him to quickly auction some items. It seems that some members got the idea that we were having an auction this month, and so they brought a few items to sell. (I think I recall some discussion early in the year about making May the auction month, but I digreess.) The club made a little money as some effects changed hands. Once that short interlude was over, John performed his version (actually Michael Ammar's version) of the coins through the silk.
All in all, it was an enjoyable evening of magic! |
