STARS AUDITION TIME
Old Business: Tom asked to see all competitors after the meeting to go over some show issues. Mike D. announced that contest rules are up front, to see him with any questions. After discussion, a motion was made to move stars of magic to the Temple of Music and Art, it was seconded and passed. The cost will be roughly $200 more to rent it, but better theater wit more seats. Pres. made mention that we will not have Dillard's Box office to sell tickets, so we must all sell tickets to make the show a success. Thanks to John Shryock for mini-lecture at William's last month. Announced stars positions that are filled and called for any volunteers to be in charge of ticket sales.
New Business Web page moving, grant running out for Mark Newhouse. John S. at Caesar's until end of June. Rumors about it closing, not true (that's why they are only rumors, Duh!!!) Club trip to magic castle loosely planned for Aug. 8, but may be changed to weekend after labor day, because Eric Buss will be there.
GOOD OF THE ORDER Eric Buss moving to L.A., we all wish him the best of luck!!! Tom Potter has Sub-Trunk for sale, A good one going cheap. Robert Garrett won 50/50 drawing, spend that nine bucks wisely!
Notes from the Prez: Looking forward to seeing you all the the BBQ on July 11th. "Practice random acts with Flashpaper" Embellish these any way you think necessary.
FUTURE MONTHLY THEMES
Stage Contest Review: MC for the event was the Doctor of Style (Tom Potter), who was received with a sold out house, impressive. Tom lightened up the audience with and introduced the first competitor Mike Deshalit. If you haven't seem Mikes act your missing out. Mike comes out to some jamming music , doing an awesome Millie Vanilly to Gloria Estephan music I might add. After some color changing cd’s that turn into a jumbo cd Mike zombies out with play trumpet. And yes you guessed it he transforms it into a real live ,yes played with his own lips, trumpet. Finally he performs one of the best linking ring routines of the millennium.(well it is really really good). I swear those rings are solid , he showed me. Next up was Chris Reviette. Chris has a unique style of humor that had a volunteer aiming a loaded nail gun, and this gun was huge, elephant hunting size, at his head. Did I say unique or crazy? Well much to the disbelief of the audience , the lovely assistant fires the gun at Chris and misses. I mean misses, you see the nail landed in his nose. It was a heck of a target. Chris had the assistant remove the nail with a pair of pliers and drop it on the stage to prove it was the real McCoy. Insanity I tell you, but it had the audience in stitches. Robert Garret , one of our youngest members was up 3rd to show what potential the upcoming generation of magicians have. He performed the famous penetrating mirror and did a series of productions and vanishes of real roses, finally to have one of them float like a feather in his hands. You can tell this kid has what it takes. Fourth on the list of competitors was our current secretary Norm Marini. Well, this was new from Norms usual comedy routines and antics and presented a nice contrast. Norm tested his feet in the dove act arena which began with gloves to silk to a dove then silk to cane to dove. After changing a rose to silk and , yes , to another dove , one might say the dove box was getting full. He performed 20th century silks only to make the middle silk grow to double its size. That was cool but then with a tug and a pull the silk grew into a huge 5ft silk. Bubble gum for the eyes. To finish Norm changed the doves into a lovely white rabbit, that could technically look like Eriks. Our last contestant was the winner from two years ago. Erik Buss came out jamming and displayed a huge 3 foot carrot that he stood straight up like spear. Showing a rabbit and putting into a box, Erik then did the unthinkable, he impailed the box on the carrot spear. Well, yeap, the rabbit came out the top of the box on the end of the carrot lifeless and limp. Brut. The audience was dying with good reason, upon removing the box Erik reached inside and showed the rabbit aok. Next we saw one of Eriks long time dreams. To a raunchy tune by the group Yello Erik did a beautiful zombie microphone routine dressed in lounge lizard attire complete with curly wig. I think the front row laughed so hard we had a yellow river flowing. Next he showed us his much evolved Kate Stan & Edith routine, only he uses no cards. Its a visual story assisted with Barbie and Ken dolls that is very original. Last ,Erik demonstrated his escape technique from a straight jacket, while locked in a jail cell and racing against time. When the the clock runs out it almost looked like the prison guard had him, but our young Houdinitte, was free. Cheers Cheers Cheers. Tom Potter was true to form and really kept a nice flow with the show and believe me he had is work cut out. Our audio techs were out to lunch it seems and the sound problems could have been a nightmare , but Tom kept the attention of the audience where it needed to be, a real Pro. While the ballots were being tallied the closing act was last years winner Bruce Spell. Bruce performed part of his winning act and treated us to a new rope routine to music he’s been working on. Tabary watch out. To close Bruce and Jan amazed once again with Geometric. This is a fooler everytime, comments from the crowd have them saying they actually see Jan getting out of the box because it’s just to impossible for her to be in there. Gotcha.
Well, this year we decided to change procedure on the stage contest. Due to
comments made by the audience concerning the winner not being revealed the
night of the contest, we decided to tally the votes and announce the winner
after the contest. The winner for the 1998 Stage Magician of the Year is -
Norm Marini. Congratulations and thanks for a job well done by all those
that participated and lets look forward to the next contest. |
